Town Meetings

During the Town Council meeting on June 17 the Council continued the meeting till June 23 at 7:00 p.m. The below item will be on the agenda. The meeting will be held at Town Hall, 485 Gay Street.

• Request of The Inn at LW, LLC, dba The Inn at Little Washington for 2.0152 acres is to change the zoning district category for the property 309 Main Street, Washington, VA 22747; Tax Map ID Number 20A-1-34 and part of 20A-1-37A from the current Village Residential (VR) to Village Mixed Use (VMU). The request is being considered in accordance with the Town of Washington Zoning Ordinance; Article 9, Amendments; Section 1, Paragraph 1.1, (c). The property is located in the Village Residential (VR) and Historic Zoning District Categories.

The Architectural Review Board will meet on June 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall (485 Gay Street). The agenda is for an application submitted by the Rappahannock Historical Society at 328 Gay Street for a wall.

June 30 – July 3 the town will be conducting valve testing throughout town. You will not lose water service but you may notice a difference in water pressure throughout the day. This is standard testing we do annually to ensure the water system is being well maintained.

The Rappahannock Historical Society is having an open house on June 22, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at 328 Gay Street.

The Christmas in Little Washington Parade Committee is looking for volunteers to help organize this wonderful community event.

There will be a brief (5 mins) fireworks display on July 12 from 9:15 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. There will be a warning shot 5 minutes before the display will begin.

There is a model of the plans for the Rush River Commons II project at the town office, 567 Mt. Salem Ave. If you’d like to view the model, call the office in advance to ensure someone is here for you.

The Town Council is accepting applications to serve on the Board of Zoning appeals. A letter of intent and qualifications can be sent to townofwashington@washingtonva.gov or PO Box 7, Washington, VA 22747. Call the Town office at 540-675-3128 with any questions.

The Town of Washington Economic Development Authority (EDA) is accepting applications for the following grant programs to encourage businesses that support the tourist trade.

Grant for the Opening of a New Retail Business:

A grant, up to but no greater than $10,000, may be awarded to support the opening of a new retail business engaging in the tourist trade within the Town.

Grant for the Opening a New Food Service Establishment:

A business owner who plans to open a new food service establishment or has opened a new establishment within the Town in the last 6 months may apply to receive a grant equal to the Meals and Lodging Taxes collected from the sale of meals for a period of 12 to 24 months from the date the business officially opened or will open. This grant will be paid on a quarterly basis.

Any business owner who would like to apply to either program should provide a proposed business plan to the EDA via the following e-mail address, eda@washingtonva.gov. Should you have any questions you may submit them to the same address or contact the Chair of the Board, Joe Whited at Joe.Whited@washingtonva.gov to discuss the matter.

To secure the grant the business will be required to sign a performance agreement. In addition, a retail business shall provide expense receipts and obtain the approval of the EDA for the work performed. A copy of the performance agreement is available for review at the Town’s offices or can be emailed to you. Please submit a request to the email address above if you wish to receive a soft copy of the agreement

Please note, in any given year the award of grants is subject to the appropriation of an annual budget for the EDA by the Town of Washington or the securing of other funding through the issuance of bonds or loans by the Board of the EDA.

On the second Monday of every month, at 7:00pm, a group of seven elected town residents who make up the Washington Town Council, meets in the historic Town Hall, circa 1857.

The Town’s Architectural Review Board (ARB) meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall.

The Town’s Planning Commission meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at Town hall.
